Mobile Network Testing: Location and Fallback Solutions

Welcome to another edition of GL’s newsletter! We are pleased to announce the latest release of our protocol emulation suite, Message Automation and Protocol Simulation (MAPS™), supporting Location Based Services (LCS) and Circuit Switched Fallback (CSFB) across 2G, 3G, and 4G networks. These emulators extend GL’s powerful MAPS™ platform, enabling service providers, equipment vendors, and R&D teams to test, validate, and automate critical network functions with ease.

This newsletter highlights five MAPS™ products that cover the full range of mobile network testing.

LTE Location Testing Solutions

Emulate and validate LTE location-based services and seamless voice/SMS fallback scenarios.

MAPS™ LTE Location Testing Solutions

MAPS™ LTE SLs Emulator: Emulates the SLs interface between the Evolved Serving Mobile Location Center (E-SMLC) and the Mobility Management Entity (MME) for LTE location services. Supports Location Services Application Part (LCS-AP) and LTE Positioning Protocol (LPP) for location requests, information exchange, aborts, and resets. Acts as E-SMLC or MME, with a GUI for bulk user equipment (UE) signaling, protocol decoding, message traceability, and automation via command-line interface (CLI) or Python scripting.

MAPS™ LTE SGs Emulator: Validates the SGs interface between LTE MMEs and 3G/2G Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) for circuit-switched fallback. Supports location updates, paging, International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) detach, and SMS delivery. Emulates MME or MSC roles, with test scripts, message customization, and automation via CLI or Python scripting.

MAPS™ IuPC Interface Emulator: Emulates the IuPC (Iu Positioning Center) interface between Radio Network Controller (RNC) and Stand-Alone Serving Mobile Location Center (SAS) for UMTS location services. Supports Positioning Calculation Application Part (PCAP) signaling for SAS-centric positioning services. Enables functional and load testing, full message decoding, flexible call flows, and automation via CLI or Python scripting.

MAPS™ Lb Interface Emulator: Emulates the Lb interface between Serving Mobile Location Center (SMLC) and Base Station Controller (BSC) for GSM location services using Base Station Subsystem Application Part for Location Services (BSSAP-LE) and Base Station System Location Application Part (BSSLAP) protocols. Supports Timing Advance (TA), Uplink-Time Difference of Arrival (U-TDOA), and Assisted Global Navigation Satellite System (A-GPS) positioning methods, with procedures for location requests and information transfer. Offers SMLC/BSC role flexibility, detailed protocol trace, ready test scripts, and automation via CLI or Python scripting.

UMTS IuCS and IuH Emulator: 3G Circuit-Switched and Femtocell Testing

MAPS™ UMTS IuCS and IuH Emulator: 3G Circuit-Switched and Femtocell Testing

Emulates the IuCS (Iu Circuit-Switched) and IuH (Iu Home Node B) interfaces for UMTS circuit-switched and femtocell signaling. Supports Radio Access Network Application Part (RANAP) and Direct Transfer Application Part (DTAP) protocols over SCTP/IP or ATM links. Enables testing of call control, supplementary services, circuit-switched fallback, SMS, and handover procedures.

MAPS™ IuCS and IuH is also available in high-density version to generate bulk UE emulation (up to 20,000 subscribers) with CSV profiles and RTP (Real-Time Transport Protocol) traffic generation for end-to-end voice and multimedia scenario validation. Automation via CLI and Python scripting is supported. The high-density version is available in both portable and rack-mountable form factors. The solution allows remote access and control.
