Overview
This monitoring system uses GL's Wireless, VoIP and TDM probes to capture the voice files in real-time. These files are
then transmitted over to GL's Voice band Analyzer, that instantly detects voice
files and with appropriate analysis modules, monitors speech levels, noise levels, line echo, and acoustic echo.
Analysis modules such as ITU-T P.561, P.562, P.563, fax and modem analysis, and many others can be hosted as
plug-ins. GL's TDM and VoIP probes support all standard protocols, and can perform detailed analysis of voice band streams.
The VBA application can also operate on pre-captured files, making it a near-real time. The analyzer has been designed
to work with GL's tools such as PacketScan™, T1/E1 Call Capture and Analysis, and many other recording tools. It
supports A-Law, µ-Law, 16-bit linear PCM, and Wave file formats.
VBA works in conjunction with GL's TDM, Packet, and Wireless non-intrusive capture products:
- VBA with GL's TDM T1 / E1 Call Capture and Analysis, or
- VBA with GL's VoIP PacketScan™
- VBA with GL's GSM, CDMA, and 3G Call Capture Products
The essential elements of the TDM and VoIP monitoring systems are:
- VoIP & TDM probes to gather information intrusively and feed it to VBA for analysis
- Voice Band Analyzer to instantly detect the voice file captures and stores the results if necessary
- A database server stores the real-time and historic data collected by the probes
- A web server, provides real-time and historic views of the data through various "browser based" interface, called as
VBA Web™.
Components of GL's Web Voice-band Monitoring System
GL's VBA Web™ demo system has a four tier architecture. The first layer consists of network probe which
non-intrusively captures the calls between the near and far end using a variety of physical interfaces. These captured call
details are transferred to VBA application, which forms the second layer. The VBA application instantly detects the call
details and operates on them, making it a near-real time (as opposed to a strictly real-time). VBA automatically analyzes
the measurements and statics of the captured calls and transmits the results to database located at the Data Layer.
This third layer provides a means for storing the captured results. The last layer is the Data Access Layer (Application Server)
where the data presentation logic is contained. Each of these components is briefly explained below.

Network Probes & Voice Band Analyzer
VBA works in conjunction with GL's TDM (Call Capture & Analysis), Packet (PacketScan™), and Wireless
non-intrusive capture products. The captured files from probes are transmitted over to GL's Voice band Analyzer that
instantly detects voice files and with appropriate analysis modules, monitors speech levels, noise levels, line echo, and
acoustic echo.
Click here for more information
on Voice Band Analyzer.
VBA works in conjunction with GL's TDM, Packet, and Wireless non-intrusive capture products:
- VBA with GL's TDM T1 / E1 Call Capture and Analysis
The Call Capture and Analysis (CCA) application is used to initiate recording of calls, either automatically or manually
directly from T1/E1 lines. The application uses HD/PCI Ultra T1 (or E1) Cards, or GL's USB Portable T1 (or E1) Analyzer Units
or Universal T1/E1 Analyzer Cards to interface non-intrusively with T1 or E1 lines. Automatic call capturing can be triggered
from both directions (east and west) of transmission.
For more details on interface characteristics visit Call Capture & Analysis page
- VBA with GL's VoIP PacketScan™
GL's PacketScan™ (VoIP Analysis Tool) acts as a probe and gathers IP packet information in a non-intrusive
fashion, and forwards call detail records (CDRs) as well as statistics to GL's Voice Band Analyzer (VBA).
This PacketScan™ probe monitors packet flows in real-time within a VoIP network & provides detailed analysis
of voice band streams gathering QOS statistics such as E-model based MOS (Mean Opinion Score), R-factor, total packet
count, reordered, duplicate and missing packet counts, gap, jitter, and delay. All major VoIP protocols are supported
including SIP, H.323, Megaco, and MGCP.

Data Layer
An Oracle database (user specified) is used to store the analytical measurement results along with all pertinent data
associated with the VBA analysis (Active Speech Level, Activity Factor, RMS Factor, DC Level, Noise Level, Echo Return Loss,
Echo Delay and Echo Dispersion). This provides a very flexible and expandable architecture for data storage and data
access. The database is accessed in real-time over the web using an application server or queried by customer applications.
A listener application is co-hosted with the database server running on the Data Layer. It collects the data posted by
the probes and then updates the database using the collected data.
Data Access Layer
The VBA Web™ provides a web interface for accessing the Active Speech Level, Activity Factor, RMS Factor,
DC Level, Noise Level, Echo Return Loss, Echo Delay and Echo Dispersion statistics along with the additional analytical
Call information. The results are queried over the internet using any browser-capable device such as desktops, table
PCs or PDAs. The application server is capable of serving the data in real-time or providing historic data based on
customer queries.
The VBA Web™ facilitates a call data and voice band analysis result display using a simple web browser.
The results are accessed from database that stores real-time and historic data.
Real-time data displays Call ID, Direction, Probe name, Calling number, Called number, Start time, Elapsed time,
Speech level/% active, RMS/noise level, clip, DC offset, Line Echo, and Acoustic Echo.
Using the VBAWeb™
Using any browser-capable-device, you can access the Call Data and Voice Band Analytical Results from anywhere
in the world. When you point your browser to the Application Server URL, the following page will be displayed.
Real-Time Data
Select the Real-Time Data tab from the main screen of the VBA Web™ in order to query the VBA database
based on the last records entered into the database. Below discussed are result display options based on which the
number of records per query, per page, or based on record table values can be queried.
Table Selector
Measurement results can be displayed based on the available tables - Call Data.
Records per Page and Query
Users can customize the required number of records to be viewed per query and per page. Less number of records
per query will result in faster system response.
Auto refresh
The Auto Refresh interval option can be set in seconds for the available records display. Choose the Refresh time in
seconds and the system will continuously refresh until the browser is closed or the ‘No Refresh’ option is selected or the
user navigates to another page.
Record Navigation
Select the Record Navigation tab from the main screen of the VBA Web™ in order to query the VBA database
based on user defined record index query.
Record Index
The First Record Index and the Last Record Index are constantly displayed as per the available number of records
for the specified table. However, users can specify the Index of the Starting Record to Display to start the record display
from that particular record number. The VBA Web™ will query the database based on the user-specified time period.
Click the Apply button in order to perform the query.
